In relation to its size, Australia is not greatly populated and there remains vast areas of unspoilt natural land. Of all the Australian states and territories the least populated of all is South Australia and the vast majority of people here live in one city, Adelaide. Renowned for its religious freedoms, political progressiveness, and rich cultural expression, Adelaide has all the commercial and leisure opportunities expected of a city with a little over one million residents yet is rather less affected by the negative impacts of mass tourism prevalent in other Australian cities In the heart of the country's wine growing regions there is much to recommend the city to visitors who wish to combine a city break experience with some rural and cultural tour and travel activities.

Unusually, for Australia, Adelaide is a city which was founded and populated by free will, rather than as a colony created by conviction and coercion, as is evidenced by the wide boulevards, large public squares, and striking Victorian architecture. Situated on the coast at the eastern end of Gulf St Vincent, the beaches are a major draw for visitors and residents alike but it is the city itself which defines a standard of living, one which places Adelaide in the top ten liveable cities in the world, and the most liveable city in Australia. A nine hour drive from the nearest city of Melbourne, most visitors will arrive by plane into Adelaide International Airport, which sees regular scheduled flights from many cities in South East Asia as well as domestic flights from other Australian cities.

The airport is less than five miles from the city centre and getting around the city is easy courtesy of the regular rail, bus and tram services. The main city attractions are easily navigable on foot but for wider travel to the suburbs and beyond, car rental is the best option and all the major national and international car rental firms are represented in the city. The beachside suburb of the city is Glenelg, served by historic trams at the weekends and holidays, and standard trams at other times. There are numerous historic seaside buildings and structures here, including the jetty, the town hall and the Grand Hotel, as well as numerous cafés, bars and restaurants.

There are some notable vantage points which give great views over the city, most notably at Montefiore Hill and Adelaide Hills, and the German settlement and city suburb of Hahndorf is worth a visit for the chocolate factory, strawberry farm and various parks and picnic facilities. A further area of note is North Terrace, a colonial style tree-lined boulevard, which provides access to various city attractions including Parliament House, numerous museums and galleries, the Botanic Gardens, and the city's two universities. The city is renowned for its festivals and events, among which are the Clipsal 500 Supercar racing event, the WOMAD, world music and dance festival, and the Adelaide Fringe Festival, one of the largest arts, music and culture festivals in the world.

As the capital of the state, the city has many hotels which are primed and ready for the corporate traveller to do business, and most of the larger and luxury Adelaide hotels will have offer adequate business provision. Many will also have an historic appeal in the grand old colonial style, while others offer ultra modern living and leisure for a contemporary world. Whether the hotel is large and imposing or small and intimate, hospitality will remain typically friendly and most hotels will have a wealth of visitor information and services on hand to enable guests easy access to the city's main sights, activities and attractions.
